Otitis in dogs and cats

Otitis is one of the top 10 most common problems that dog and cat owners go to the veterinary clinic. What is this disease, how does it manifest and how to deal with it?
What is otitis media?
Otitis is the common name for inflammatory processes in the ear. It can be external (affects the ear before the eardrum), middle (the department with auditory ossicles) and internal (the department is in close proximity to the brain).

If with timely contact with a specialist, external otitis can be easily treated within a few days, then internal otitis is a serious threat to the life of the animal. Otitis media is considered quite common and in the case of prompt and high-quality treatment does not pose a threat to health, however, procrastination or improperly selected drugs can lead to hearing loss and the development of internal otitis media.

As soon as the owner has suspected ear inflammation in a pet, it is necessary to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible! The ear is close to the brain, and by delaying you risk the life of your ward.

Causes of Otitis
Otitis in dogs and cats often develops in the cold season. Frost on the street, drafts at home, a seasonal decrease in immunity – all this can lead to inflammation of the ear. Dogs with erect ears are especially susceptible to disease, since their auricle is not protected from the wind.

Inflammation can develop not only from the cold. Other provocateurs are: injuries, allergic reactions, infection with a fungus, parasites, moisture.

Treatment of the disease is prescribed depending on the type of otitis media in each case.

Otitis in dogs and cats: symptoms
Signs of otitis media in dogs and cats are easy to spot. Inflammation of the ear causes great discomfort. The animal shakes its head, tilts its head toward the affected ear, and tries to scratch it. The auricle becomes hot, turns red, discharge and crusts appear on it. Often there is an unpleasant odor. The general behavior of the pet is restless, body temperature may rise.

If you notice these symptoms, immediately contact your veterinarian.

Treatment and prevention of otitis media
The ear is located near the brain, and any diseases of this organ must be cured as soon as possible. Without timely treatment, otitis media leads to partial or complete hearing loss, and in the most serious cases, to the development of meningitis and subsequent death of the animal.

Treatment of otitis media is prescribed exclusively by a veterinarian. Inflammation can be caused by various causes, and the treatment differs on a case-by-case basis.

The sooner treatment begins, the more chances to eliminate the disease without harm to the health and life of the animal.

As a preventive measure it is necessary:

– keep the ears clean (effectively and painlessly cleanses the ears with 8in1 lotion and ISB Traditional Line Clean Ear);

– do not let the pet get too cold (for this, adjust the duration of walks in the case of dogs and be sure to get a warm bed so that the cat or dog does not freeze at home. If necessary, buy warm clothes for the pet),

– regularly carry out treatment against parasites and vaccination,

– maintain a proper diet.

The stronger the pet’s immunity, the less likely it is to develop not only otitis media, but also other serious diseases.

Take care of your wards, and let all diseases bypass them!
